A new GLP-1 drug, pemvidutide, helped patients lose fat while guarding muscle, like exercise does. That's impressive when you compare it to existing GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy (semaglutide), or Mounjaro and Zepbound (tirzepatide). This is why doctors recommend patients on weight loss drugs do some strength training in tandem with their medication. Pemvidutide, like tirzepatide is a two-part drug that combines a GLP-1 drug with another drug in a single shot. "There is a growing appreciation that the quality of weight loss is as important as the quantity of weight loss," Scott Harris, Altimmune's chief medical officer, said in a release.

Some health experts have said that obesity drugs could shrink critical muscle mass, which could raise the risk of injuries and decrease strength. Those results are similar to those often seen with diet and exercise programs for weight loss. "There is a growing appreciation that the quality of weight loss is as important as the quantity of weight loss." For example, Eli Lilly is testing whether combining its weight loss drug with a monoclonal antibody from Versanis Bio might help patients lose weight while preserving muscle mass. The pharmaceutical giant recently acquired Versanis, which is part of a slate of companies targeting the muscle-loss aspect of weight loss.

Eli Lilly on Thursday reported third-quarter revenue and adjusted earnings that topped estimates on strong demand for its diabetes drug Mounjaro, but slashed its full-year profit guidance due to charges primarily related to its recent acquisitions. Eli Lilly recorded pre-tax "in-process research and development" charges of $2.98 billion, which are primarily related to a slew of recent buyouts, including DICE Therapeutics, Versanis Bio and Emergence Therapeutics AG. "This is essentially the future value of business development deals we have done," Eli Lilly CEO David Ricks said on CNBC's "Squawk Box" on Thursday. But Eli Lilly reiterated its full-year revenue forecast of between $33.4 billion and $33.9 billion. With a market cap of roughly $526 billion, Eli Lilly is the largest pharmaceutical company based in the U.S.

LLY YTD mountain Eli Lilly's year-to-date stock performance. Investors are understandably cheering the results, sending Eli Lilly shares higher by more than 4%. "Eli Lilly today is beginning its next leg of going up," Jim Cramer said during Thursday's Morning Meeting . The most important line item was Mounjaro sales, which cleared Wall Street's high bar. Excluding that divestiture and the $387 million in Covid antibody sales in the year-ago quarter, Eli Lilly's sales grew 24% on an annual basis — a highly respectable figure.

One of the downsides of taking new anti-obesity medications is that patients tend to lose lean muscle mass along with body fat. "This is a major shortcoming in terms of not just quality of life for the patients who have to lose lean muscle mass, but there's actually room to improve on the weight loss and there [are] other metabolic benefits to improving your lean muscle mass ... [including] you might have better durability of weight loss." The drug is being tested in a phase 2b study alongside semaglutide to protect against loss of muscle mass. Until then, patients will need to watch what they eat and focus on exercise just as they would on any other weight loss regimen. When that occurs, muscle loss will be an even bigger issue than it is now.

Still, he said it's "healthy" for a company like Eli Lilly — valued over $500 billion, as of Thursday — to be executing smaller deals. "They can still put their mark on an asset or a constellation of drugs," said Seigerman, who has a buy rating and $633-per-share price target on Eli Lilly stock. Calling it the "best fundamental story" among U.S. large caps, UBS analyst Colin Bristow on Friday lifted his price target to $612 from $526. The stock has already gained 47% year to date, mostly on the back of lofty expectations for weight loss drug sales. Bristow also expects data for its Crohn's disease treatment by year-end, as well as readouts on Verzenio for prostate cancer. Then by 2024, Lilly is expected to submit data for a cell therapy for type 1 diabetes. And there's potential for even more upside if the drug adds other indications such as renal treatment, he said.

Eli Lilly on Friday said it will acquire Versanis, a privately held obesity drug maker, for up to $1.93 billion to boost the pharmaceutical giant's weight loss treatment portfolio. Eli Lilly agreed to pay Versanis shareholders in cash, which will consist of an upfront payment and potentially subsequent payments if Versanis achieves certain "development and sales milestones." Oakland, California-based Versanis, which was founded in 2021 by biotech investment firm Aditum Bio, has one experimental drug for obesity and potentially other conditions. Analysts project that the global weight loss drug market could be worth $100 billion by around 2030. Versanis' drug, bimagrumab, binds directly to certain cells in the body to reduce fat mass.

July 14 (Reuters) - Eli Lilly and Co (LLY.N) said on Friday it will buy privately held Versanis for potentially up to $1.93 billion to strengthen its position in the fast-growing market for weight-loss treatments. Shares of Eli Lilly rose 3% after the deal that gives it access to an experimental obesity drug being tested along with rival Novo Nordisk's (NOVOb.CO) weight-loss treatment in a mid-stage study. Analysts expect the market for weight-loss drugs to reach up to $100 billion within a decade, with early movers such as Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk grabbing a large chunk of the market. "One of the key concerns with weight loss medications is the loss of lean mass. The goal is to lose more fat vs. muscle, but with any weight loss program calorie restriction could impact both," said BMO Capital Markets analyst Evan Seigerman.

More than 40% of Americans are obese, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and demand is strong for treatments to reduce body weight as well as maintain weight loss. The company said it would continue to develop its twice-daily weight loss drug candidate. Structure Therapeutics (GPCR.O) is developing oral obesity drugs that it says are simpler to manufacture than the current injectables. "We define weight loss quality as the percentage of weight loss attributed to fat loss," said Versanis Chief Scientific Officer Lloyd Klickstein. "With diets, bariatric surgery, incretin drugs or other weight loss drugs, two-thirds to three-quarters of the weight loss is fat, but one-quarter to one-third is lean."
